Union Pacific Steam Survivors
By Lloyd E. Stagner with Bob Yarger
Union Pacific Steam Survivors examines the status of 52 still-extant Union Pacific steam locomotives. Most were given either to communities or museums, while a few were retained by the railroad for its own corporate collection. The Union Pacific is unique among large Class 1 Railroads that donated old locomotives in that it has continued to maintain two operative steam engines, the 4-8-4 No. 844 and the 4-6-6-4 No. 3985. The majority of preserved UP steam, however, will continue to be on static display in community parks and museums, where they -- especially those at outdoor display sites -- need regular maintenance. Steam historian Lloyd E. Stagner relates the service history of these locomotives, while steam preservationist Bob Yarger comments on how these machines can be saved for long-term posterity. Together, the authors provide an informative and illustrated guide on what can be done to save some of these historic relics of another transportation age before it's too late. 48 pages, B&W, Softcover.

Union Pacific’s Big Boys; The complete story from history to restoration.
Forward by Jim Wrinn
The UP’s 25 4-8-8-4 Big Boys have a mystique and a fan following like no other class of steam loco.  They represent the culmination of modern steam technology, handsome  looks, and power mighty enough to pull long trains at high speed on steep grades.  These traits made them legendary among railroaders, railfans, photographers, and model railroaders alike. In” Union Pacific’s Big Boys” you’ll learn how the original locomotives, built by Alco in two groups in 1941 and 1944, were developed.  You’ll trace the evolution of modern steam locomotive technology, including early compound and simple articulated locomotives and the early high-horsepower “Super Power” locos with increased firebox and boiler capacity that led to the Big Boy design.  And you’ll celebrate he revival of the class with UP’s restoration of #4014 to operating condition in 2019. Along with dozens of photos showing Big Boys’ operating careers in fast freight service through the 1950s, you’ll read tales of those who operated and worked on the big 4-8-8-4’s. Finally, you’ll follow along as No. 4014 is rebuilt between 2013 and 2019, seeing up close how the locomotive progresses from a display track in a park in California to UP’s shops at Cheyenne ,Wyo. And eventually back to the main line under steam in 2019. This is more than the story of a famous engine.  It’s a tribute to the pinnacle of steam locomotive design and power, and to the thrill of seeing one of these majestic machines reborn. 222 pages, B&W and Color, Hardcover.
